KISHIO SUGA: SITUATIONS

This catalogue was produced for Kishio Suga: Situations at Pirelli HangarBicocca in Milan (30 September 2016 – 29 January 2017), the artist's first retrospective at a European institution, which presented twenty-three major installations from the 1960s to the late 1990s.

It features an essay by the exhibition’s curator, Yuko Hasegawa, and Barbara Bertozzi's essay “The Language of Things: Theory and Artistic Production of Mono-ha” (1988), which was originally published in the catalogue for the first exhibition of Mono-ha presented outside Japan, at Rome University in 1988. The book also includes translations of two landmark essays by Suga: “Beyond The Start of Disappearance: As Things Deny Things” (1969) and “Existence Beyond Condition” (1970), as well as a chronology of the artist's life.

Ashley Rawlings’ text provides in-depth analysis of each of the twenty-three installations featured in the exhibition, situating them in their original historical context and examining how they have evolved with each time the artist remade them in subsequent decades.
